The Casual Shirt Guide
Our guide to the essential casual shirts you need for this Fall and Winter. From fabrics to collars, we break down the details that go into these classics.
The Western Shirt
Soft indigo fading, front chest pockets, Western detailing, and Mother of Pearl snaps come together to make this American classic. Wear it over a t-shirt for an easy stylish look.

The Oxford Cloth Button Down
A classic with American heritage. A good oxford cloth is hardy, durable, and comfortable, unpretentious yet refined. Style it with a soft button down collar and rounded chest pocket for that traditional look.

Chambray is known for fading that gets better with time. A low-profile collar, utility pockets, and Natural Corozo buttons make this shirt really stand out.

The Versatile Plaid Shirt
A large plaid pattern paired with a spread collar, front placket, and chest pocket makes for a stylish yet relaxed look. Tuck it in to keep things on the sleeker side.

The Smart Denim Shirt
Paired with a soft spread collar and a minimalist French front, the smart denim shirt dresses up but retains a sophisticated-casual edge thanks to the faded, slightly puckered seams.

The Elevated Flannel Shirt
Flannels are some of the softest fabrics you’ll find, and in a solid or subtle pattern they’re particularly easy to wear. Pair with a soft button down collar for a look that’s elevated yet relaxed.

The Long Sleeve Polo
Rooted in athletic wear, the long sleeve polo swings from the golf course to the casual office setting with ease. Knit fabrics like this have plenty of stretch for maximum comfort.

Fabric Choices
For the colder seasons, we generally reach for heavier fabrics like denims, chambrays, oxfords and flannels.
Denims and chambrays fade slightly at the seams for a worn-in casual look that gets better over time. Hardy oxfords naturally resist wrinkles and pair will jeans and chinos alike.
And there’s nothing like a soft flannel to stay warm and comfortable on a cooler day.
Style Details
Collar Styles
Stick to our soft, unfused collars. The Soft President Spread and Soft President Semi-Spread have a bit more presence and dress things up a bit more compared to smaller collars. The smaller Soft Franklin Spread is a modern, wearable, and easy casual collar, while the Soft Ivy Button Down is a more traditional choice.

Cuff Styles
Casual shirts should have soft, no-nonsense cuffs. Avoid fused and French cuffs for these shirts. The Soft Long One Button cuff has an elegant, simple shape, and the Soft Square Two-Button provides a bit more visual interest.

Pockets
Casual shirts don’t require pockets, but they can certainly have them—they’re a great way to add a little more detail. Consider a Rounded pocket if you like to use a chest pocket, or simply like the look of it. Dual pockets lean into a functional, utilitarian look.
Front Styles (Placket)
Keep the shirt Front soft and relaxed for easy maintenance and a relaxed look that matches the fabric. For a sleeker look that’s easily dressed up, forego the placket entirely with a French front (no placket). A Standard Front or Stand Up placket with fusing are too formal for the laidback vibe of a casual shirt.
