Fabric Description

A deep, rich indigo featuring a centuries-old Japanese technique.

This absolutely stunning fabric is a first for us. Canclini created its beautiful tiny checkerboard pattern using the Japanese sashiko technique, which involves very precise stitching and spacing, and originally added a decorative element to the mended clothing of fishermen and farmers. Dark indigo-dyed fabric is a traditional base for sashiko, so we jumped at the chance to include it in our washed indigo collection. A light bleach wash gives this fabric a very saturated color initially, and it’ll fade beautifully over time.

From sourcing the perfect denim from a legendary Italian mill to testing washes with our factory for months on end, we labor over every detail of our washed indigo shirts. Each of them starts out as a plain or textured weave fabric that’s been dyed heavily with indigo. After being cut and sewn, the shirts are then garment washed using either a light enzyme, soda, or bleaching process. It's this process that gives each shirt its beautiful color and unique fading around the seams. While garment washed indigo and denim shirts are a popular product in the ready-to-wear market, they haven't previously been available in a custom fit or design due to the bulk production required for the washing process. We've worked closely with our suppliers to bring you the first truly custom garment washed indigo and denim shirts on the market. Premium, carefully crafted shirts, made to your exact specifications. Recommended Styling: Try it with our Soft Ivy Button Down collar, Soft Front placket, and Rounded pocket for a traditional casual look. Note that, due to the special nature of the garment washing process, this fabric can only be made using soft, unfused collars, cuffs, and fronts/plackets.

  • The shirt is well-constructed and fits well. But the fabric itself left me rather disappointed. It is rather dark, darker than appears on photos, and looks like plain navy shirt. You have to come really close to see the texture.

  • This is a very special fabric. The color is a perfect, deep shade of indigo. The sashiko is very unique and adds subtle visual interest and amazing texture.

November 2023  ·  Brian in Phila, PA

  • The fabric has an almost heavy oxford cloth quality to it in that it's sturdy and hardy, but it also has a lightness to it that allows the fabric to drape very well. Great fabric that pulls off the sophisticated yet relaxed look. The blue is a knockout indigo hue that should satisfy all indigo lovers too.

October 2023  ·  Theodore in REDONDO BEACH, CA

  • It was slightly heavier and stiffer than I expected, and took a few washes to finally soften it up.

August 2023  ·  Nathan in Cambridge, ON

  • This is an amazingly beautiful cloth.

August 2023  ·  Stanford in Ridgewood, NJ

  • The fabric is great with a great texture and flexibility. If you want something that stands out in a classy subtle way from other navy button downs, build a shirt with this. You will be impressed.

August 2023  ·  Randall in Bristow, VA

  • This was a really unique fabric that I used for a camp style shirt. It is phenomenal and highly unusual in that use. I would happily do it again with other colors.

August 2023  ·  Matthew in CHICAGO, IL

  • If there was an OMG! clothing brand, this shirt would be the first production run. OMG! Did I say that already? Everything rich that you could want in a shirt is right here. Every single bit of richness. It is a head-turner. Including your own.

August 2023  ·  James in Ocean Park, ME

  • Nice twist on a standard denim shitt

  • This fabric is has an excellent texture and classy look especially worn with blue jeans.

October 2021  ·  Duane in CANYON LAKE, TX

  • The deep blue color of this fabric is really striking, and the texture really gives it depth. This fabric is fairly thick and a little stiff, but still comfortable to wear on warmer days with the sleeves rolled up.

September 2021  ·  Spencer in Greensboro, NC

  • Great color and texture on this fabric. The fabric itself is mid-weight and breathes nicely, but the texture of the weave makes it look and feel more substantial.

February 2021  ·  Steven in Union, NJ

  • A beautiful color and weave, only time will tell how washings will change the look of the indigo, but that's a feature, not a bug! A sturdy soft fabric.

February 2021  ·  Dan in New York, NY

  • It is a deep indigo blue just as pictured. I had it laundered but is better right out if the dryer for a more casual look.

January 2021  ·  david in Kirkland, WA

  • lightens up fast

January 2021  ·  Tyler in Phoenix, AZ

  • I bought this fabric on a whim, unsure whether I would really like it. I wish I had ordered more. This cloth is so soft, the colour so beautifully rich and the overall feel of the unusual weave so luxurious that this is an instant favourite. I will be ordering more as soon as the opportunity arises

January 2021  ·  Ian in Dulverton, Somerset

  • Great feel and look. Love it

January 2021  ·  Barry in Palm Beach Gardens, FL

  • Really like the feel and appearance of the texture

January 2021  ·  Ronald in Cedarhurst, PA

  • I love the deep blue color of the fabric. It is substantial without being heavy. It is next to impossible to find fabric like this on a store-bought shirt. I always like the products from Proper Cloth and have ordered about 10 shirts and a few other items like sweaters and pants. I will be ordering more.

January 2021  ·  Scott in Atlantic Beach, FL

  • Very unique

January 2021  ·  Nicholas in Sag Harbor, NY

January 2021  ·  mike in Western Springs, IL

  • Very comfortable. Surprisingly light but still with substance. The texture is great – you can tell this is going to get a really interesting depth of colour as it fades.

January 2021  ·  Lindsay in Calgary, AB

  • Incredibly light and soft and smooth. It looks amazing
