Fabric Description

A washed indigo first.

This 60s single-ply 100% cotton knit is a unique offering for our washed indigo collection. Soft, breathable, and naturally stretchy, this version of Canclini’s knit piqué is the perfect fabric for a polo shirt or casual long sleeve shirt for spring, summer, or fall. The deep, rich blue shade is particularly saturated and even, though it will fade a bit with washing to give it that special lived-in look. The color is achieved through the reaction of the indigo dye with a heavy bleach wash.

From sourcing the perfect denim from a 185-year-old mill in Italy to testing washes with our factory for months on end, we labor over every detail of our washed indigo shirts. Each of them starts out as a plain or textured weave fabric that’s been dyed heavily with indigo. After being cut and sewn, the shirts are then garment washed using either a light enzyme, soda, or bleaching process. It‘s this process that gives each shirt its beautiful color and unique fading around the seams. While garment washed indigo and denim shirts are a popular product in the ready-to-wear market, they haven‘t previously been available in a custom fit or design due to the bulk production required for the washing process. We‘ve worked closely with our suppliers to bring you the first truly custom garment washed indigo and denim shirts on the market. Premium, carefully crafted shirts, made to your exact specifications. Learn more about our washed indigo and denim shirts here.

Recommended Styling: Go with our Soft Franklin Spread collar, One Button Polo placket, and Slate Horn buttons for a versatile polo shirt look. Note that, due to the special nature of the garment washing process, this fabric can only be made using soft, unfused collars, cuffs, and fronts/plackets.

Since our limited-run garment washed indigo and denim fabrics are made in small batches with a special process, these shirts will have a longer delivery time which is reflected in cart.

August 2023  ·  Mohamed in Latham, NY

  • Interesting fabric that is medium weight for a pique polo shirt. The washed indigo nature does make it look a bit less refined so it is more suited to casual applications in my opinion.

August 2021  ·  Robert in Newport Beach, CA

  • Great for a polo

August 2021  ·  Gareth in LONDON, LONDON

  • This cloth makes for a wonderful short sleeve polo, maybe long sleeve for the daring. The uneven fading of this cloth is beautiful, and should become even more so over time, but it decidedly makes it more casual.

August 2021  ·  Stanford in Ridgewood, NJ

  • Lovely stretch and drape. Very comfortable and a perennial favorite.

August 2021  ·  Christian in Houston, TX

  • Great color and texture/feel.

August 2021  ·  Daniel F in Nashville, TN

  • Color is more muted/faded than in the pictures, and also more interesting/unusual. I love the authentic garment-dyed look of this material. It feels a bit like a terry towel, very soft and with enough stretch that it's very comfortable. My first polo shirt from propercloth, and I'm really enjoying it. After first wash, though I still love the color, it's lightened a little, shows some spots, and it doesn't drape as well as it did before washing. I think this is probably part of being a pique knit, but a little below my usual experience with propercloth.
