Jacket Front Length

How it Works

The Front Length adjustment lets you change the front length of a jacket independently from the back length.

The jacket front length is measured from the high point of the shoulder (where the shoulder meets the lapel) down to the lowest part of the front quarter.

With our Standard setting, the jacket’s front length will be 1.5″ longer than the back length.

Selecting Shorten 1.5″Shorten 1″, or Shorten 0.5″ will reduce the front length by the specified amount relative to Standard. Selecting Lengthen 0.5″ increases the front length 0.5″ relative to Standard so that it becomes 2″ longer than the back length.

Our Recommendation

For a nice fitting jacket, our goal is typically for the front and back of the jacket to appear evenly aligned with the floor when worn. Achieving this typically requires the front to be slightly longer than the back due to the natural shape of the human body—hence the 1.5″ longer standard.

  • For men who are particularly thin or have a slightly stooped forward posture, using one of the Shorten settings may improve the balance.
  • For men with a prominent chest or midsection, or a very erect posture, lengthening the front further may produce a more balanced appearance.
