Typically, our standard placement is just a shade below the &#8220;industry average,&#8221; to allow for a better look with your collar undone and the first placket button fastened.<\/p>\n<p>Per the opening dialogue of season one, episode one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0697695\/quotes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seinfeld<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>JERRY: Seems to me, that button is in the worst possible spot. [talking about George&#8217;s shirt] The second button literally makes or breaks the shirt, look at it: it&#8217;s too high! It&#8217;s in no-man&#8217;s-land, you look like you live with your mother.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Standard Top Button Placement<\/h2>\n<p>By default, we place the top button such that its center is 2 7\/8&#8243; below the bottom of the collar band.<\/p>\n<h2>Spacing Between 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. Buttons<\/h2>\n<p>Button Spacing refers to the distance between the buttons on the shirt front measured from button center to button center. This is different from the distance between the collar button and the top shirt button, which is controlled by Top Button Placement.<\/p>\n<p>Button Spacing cannot be specified directly. It is automatically determined by the system based on the shirt Back Length, Posture, and Top Button Placement settings. Button Spacing options are 3 1\/8\u2033 (3.1\u2033), 3 1\/4\u2033 (3.3\u2033) or 3.5\u2033.<\/p>\n<p>By adjusting the spacing between the buttons slightly we&#8217;re able to better optimize the position of the bottom button on the shirt relative to the shirt tail (&#8216;Bottom Distance&#8217;) and avoid it being too close or too far away from the end of the shirt.<\/p>\n<h2>Top Button Placement Options<\/h2>\n<p>We offer four different options: &#8220;Raised 1&#8221;, &#8220;Raised 1\/2&#8221;, &#8220;Standard&#8221;, &#8220;Lowered 1\/2&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Selecting <em><strong>Raised 1&#8243;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0raises the first button on the placket of the shirt up 1&#8243; from our standard. \u00a0This decreases the space between the bottom of the collar band and this button from 2 7\/8&#8243; to 1 7\/8&#8243;.<\/li>\n<li>Selecting <em><strong>Raised 1\/2&#8243;<\/strong><\/em> raises the first button on the placket of the shirt up 1\/2&#8243; from our standard. \u00a0This decreases the space between the bottom of the collar band and this button from 2 7\/8&#8243; to 2 3\/8&#8243;.<\/li>\n<li>Selecting <em><strong>Standard<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0the default setting. \u00a0This centers\u00a0the top button 2 7\/8&#8243; from\u00a0the bottom of the collar band. \u00a0*Note that our standard button placement is already just slightly lower than what many consider &#8220;normal&#8221;, so if you&#8217;re looking for a lower button placement on your first order, do not necessarily start with Lower 1\/2&#8243;.<\/li>\n<li>Selecting <em><strong>Lowered 1\/2&#8243;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0lowers the first button on the placket of the shirt down 1\/2&#8243; from our standard. \u00a0This increases the space between the bottom of the collar band and this button from 2 7\/8&#8243; to 3 3\/8&#8243;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1581\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1581\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1581\" src=\"https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1.jpg\" alt=\"Top Button Placement\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1-140x140.jpg 140w, https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Top Button Placement<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Reasons to Change Top Button Placement<\/h2>\n<p>Most people won&#8217;t need to change\u00a0the first button placement on their shirts, but here are some reasons to consider it.<\/p>\n<h2>The Placket Bump<\/h2>\n<p>The primary\u00a0fit problem\u00a0that can be addressed with\u00a0button placement is when you notice a &#8220;bump&#8221; between the collar button and the first button on the placket. Generally this problem resolves itself when a tie is worn, and is not an issue if the collar is left unbuttoned. \u00a0However,\u00a0if you&#8217;re wearing the shirt buttoned all the way up without a tie, or if you have a particular posture that causes this to be a problem even with a tie on,\u00a0you will want to consider this adjustment.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1582\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1582\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1582\" src=\"https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2.jpg\" alt=\"Dress Shirt Placket Bump\" width=\"1024\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2-500x256.jpg 500w, https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2-700x358.jpg 700w, https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2-196x100.jpg 196w, https:\/\/propercloth.com\/reference\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2-140x72.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dress Shirt Placket Bump<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This issue can be improved or totally eliminated by raising the position of the first button on the placket. By raising this button 0.5&#8243; or 1&#8243;, the\u00a0space between the collar and top button is reduced and the placket becomes much more likely to lay flat to the body, regardless of your fit profile.<\/p>\n<h2>Perfecting\u00a0Your Unbuttoned Look<\/h2>\n<p>Some guys prefer\u00a0to wear the collar button and the top placket\u00a0button unbuttoned, but find that this shows just a bit more chest than they are comfortable with. Switching to <em><strong>Raised 1\/2&#8243;<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>Raised 1&#8243;<\/strong><\/em> raises the 2nd button placement by the same amount, which reduces the amount of chest that will show. \u00a0This\u00a0can help with\u00a0hiding chest hair or a v-neck undershirt&#8217;s visibility.
