Ethos

“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” — Epictetus

At Proper Cloth, we believe that a well-lived life is one spent developing excellence: of craft, of judgment, and of character. It is a life oriented toward growth, wisdom, and integrity: improving ourselves and what is in our care, and contributing meaningfully to the world.

For that reason, the Stoic virtues form the foundation of our ethos. They are represented in our four brand marks, and they guide how we think, how we build, and how we treat others. These ideas are ancient, but they remain practical.

Wisdom

Wisdom is the use of reason to understand what matters and how to act. Having wisdom means knowing what is good, what is bad, and what is just noise. With technology today, data enables knowledge, knowledge enables understanding, and understanding enables wisdom. Wisdom is knowing how to judge a particular situation correctly and what to do to get a desired outcome.

At Proper Cloth, our love of wisdom means that even after 18 years, we’re still learning about fabrics, fit, technology, and people. We’re constantly seeking to understand cause and effect: why does a particular fabric drape so beautifully? Why does a fit adjustment work for a certain customer? By truly understanding, we are able to improve.

“If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.”

— Epictetus

Courage

Courage is the discipline to do the right thing despite fear or discomfort. Having courage does not mean ignoring risk; it means understanding it, judging which risks are worth taking, and acting rationally in their presence. Over time, courage becomes endurance: the ability to withstand pain, or criticism, and as initiative: taking action when inaction feels safer.

At Proper Cloth, courage means breaking with the conventional ways of doing business when we see fit. It could mean building a new ecommerce platform from scratch. It could mean opening showrooms that are invisible from the street. It could mean supporting an unprecedented return/remake policy to enable customers to fine-tune their fit. Courage is not bravado, but steady action in the presence of danger.

“The brave man is not he who feels no fear, but he who conquers it.”

— Seneca

Temperance

Temperance is having the self-command to choose purpose over convenience. It is the strength to not let the desires for pleasure, the aversions to discomfort, or emotional reactions distract us from reason and our long-term mission.

At Proper Cloth, temperance means choosing refinement over excess. Finding balance in product design, showroom design, and how we do business. It means prioritizing long-term success over shortcuts that may work in the moment but challenge the business over time. By mastering our impulses for speed, growth, or attention, we create space for lasting quality, loyal customers, and long-term brand value.

“No man is free who is not master of himself.”

— Epictetus

Justice

Justice is acting fairly, honestly, and with concern for the common good. Fairness means equal opportunities, not necessarily equal outcomes. Justice means holding ourselves to the same standards we expect of others, and is a reminder that we exist as a part of a larger system: with customers, colleagues, partners, communities, and the planet.

At Proper Cloth, justice means treating employees, partners, and customers with fairness, integrity, and respect. It means finding ways to be more sustainable with our products and packaging. It means being mindful of our impact on culture and the images that we present.

“What is not good for the hive is not good for the bee.”

— Marcus Aurelius
